The firm also said in July that all its auto models launched after 2019 will be electric or hybrids, making it the first major traditional automaker to set a date for phasing out vehicles powered exclusively by the internal combustion engine. The pure electric coupe hybrid is promising 600 horsepower and class-leading range and efficiency.
Volvo Cars' Polestar brand claimed some world firsts while unveiling its debut model, the Polestar 1 high-performance plug-in hybrid coupe, in Shanghai this week.
Volvo has committed to produce only electric vehicles from 2019.
The Polestar 1 will arrive in 2019, with numbers to be capped at just 500 units per year due to its finicky carbon fiber-intensive production process. The company is so serious about the new model and possibly other BEV models that it is building a brand new manufacturing facility next to the main factory in Stuttgart.

Polestar models will be serviced at selected Volvo dealers, although their drivers won't need to visit the workshop, as all issues will be dealt with online. It also features Ohlins continuously controlled electric suspension (CESi). Much of the Polestar 1 (about half) is based on Volvo's Scalable Product Architecture; the rest is entirely new technology developed by Polestar engineers working within Volvo's R&D department.
Polestar's radical all-electric approach will be matched by an equally radical method of selling its cars. It will be called as the Polestar 1 and the production is expected to start by mid-2019. There will be no Polestar dealers - and no Polestar cars in the corner of a Volvo showroom - but there will be Polestar retail "spaces".
The initial phase of the Polestar product roll out will then be completed by the subsequent arrival of a larger SUV-style BEV, the Polestar 3, which will create a modern expression of electric performance and driving dynamics. The Polestar 1 will be acquired via zero-deposit deal over two or three years, with everything incorporated into one monthly payment. Both will be battery electric vehicles (BEVs). The costs will include insurance and maintenance.
