Bangladesh, Myanmar agree on 'working group' for refugee plan

"The talks were held in a friendly atmosphere and Myanmar has made a proposal to take back the Rohingya refugees", the minister told reporters after meeting Kyaw Tint Swe in Dhaka.

More than 2,000 Rohingya have massed along Myanmar's coast this week after trekking from inland villages in Rakhine state to join the refugee exodus to Bangladesh, state media reported Saturday.

At Monday's meeting, Bangladesh proposed signing a bilateral agreement for the repatriation process and handed over a draft to the Myanmar delegation, the Minister added.

Nobel peace laureate Suu Kyi, who has been severely criticised for her failure to curb the military crackdown on the Rohingya, said in a speech last month that Myanmar would take back "verified" refugees.

The head of the United Nations' food-assistance agency on Sunday urged the worldwide community to step up its support for the relief operation for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh or risk "a massive catastrophic disaster".

The Rohingya, a Muslim minority, do not qualify for Myanmar citizenship even though many have lived there for generations. Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina earlier called for an end to the violence and for safe zones to be set up in Myanmar to enable refugees to return.

Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi addressed human rights violations concerns in the Rakhine state in September, pledging [JURIST report] that "a$3 ction will be taken against all people, regardless of their religion, race and political position, who go against the law of the land and violate human rights".

Bangladesh is to move to a camp at least 15,000 Rohingya refugees who have settled in a restive hill district near the border with Myanmar, a local official said Sunday.

More than half a million Rohingya Muslims have fled Myanmar's Rakhine state and sought refuge in Bangladesh since late August. At the same time, Bangladesh has been pushing Myanmar to take back the refugees.

However, the Myanmar minister did not disclose anything regarding the framework of the commission.

According to Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Abul Hasan Mahmood Ali, around 3,000 Rohingya have been killed in the crackdown.
