Democratic and Republican U.S. governors on Wednesday urged the Trump administration, as well as Congress, to continue funding payments to health insurance companies that make Obamacare plans affordable, calling it critical to stabilizing the insurance marketplace. "Without payment of these cost-sharing reductions, Americans will be hurt".
"I am consulting with Senator Murray to make these hearings bipartisan and to involve as many members of the committee as possible, all who want to can be involved".
The most important first step is for Trump to announce that his administration will commit to continuing $7 billion a year in cost-sharing reduction subsidies that have allowed 7 million low- and middle-income Americans to get health insurance coverage.
Obamacare premiums in California are going to increase by 12.5% for 2018 health insurance plans. Same thing goes for Obamacare, which was built on a hybrid business model to garner the support of insurance companies anxious about the potential for drooping profits.
But it may be harder now for the president to drop the appeal or to simply stop making the payments. And, other states that have released their rates have said that they had to make their rates higher because of the uncertainty created by Trump's threats to cancel the payments - in Colorado it means rate increases almost 30% more for next year. Up to half of the states will likely have bare counties with zero insurance providers offering insurance on the exchanges, and insurance premiums will increase by roughly 20 percent, according to America's Health Insurance Plans.
Over the weekend President Donald Trump unleashed a Tweet-storm, threatening members of Congress if they don't repeal and/or replace Obamacare.

On Sunday Trump aides took to the Sunday morning talk-show circuit to deliver the message that the President is prepared to end cost-sharing reduction payments to insurers in a bid to let "Obamacare implode".
Trump has appeared ready to attempt to wreck the 2010 law commonly known as "Obamacare" by creating chaos in health insurance markets.
"I hope the president continues to make those payments until such time as we have the opportunity to pass something that repeals the law and replaces it with something better", said Sen. The recent bipartisan effort by senators is based on providing affordable health care to untold numbers of Americans ("Bipartisan drive to pay health insurers faces Senate hurdles", August 2). Even when it seems as straightforward as ending "bailouts" to insurance companies.
"It's what the Democrats want", Cruz said Tuesday.
More specifically, McConnell said "no action" was not an option.
So what happens if Trump decides to end these payments?
