Twenty people, accused of the public lynching of deputy superintendent Ayub Pandith, were arrested in Kashmir over the course of the last month, said Kashmir IG Munir Khan, during a press conference on Monday.
Inspector general of police (Kashmir range) Muneer Khan told reporters that 20 people were arrested for the crime on June 23, when thousands had gathered for night-long congregational prayers on Islam's holiest night of Shab-e-Qadr. Gilkar and his associates Aaqib Gul and Javaid Ahmad Shiekh were killed in an overnight gunbattle with security forces in the Redbugh area of Budgam on July 12.
Khan also ruled out any possibility of dereliction of duty by the police in the case and said apart from the darkness and the noise, no one knew of Pandith's identity. Some youngsters, according to police, shouting pro-Zakir Musa slogans were coming out of the masjid to welcome Mirwaiz Umer Farooq.
"The important pieces of evidence including an iron rod, by which the officer was hit, his identity card, service pistol (in a damaged condition) and his cell phone have been recovered, he said". He was on security duty outside the mosque.

After the clip concluded, a montage began with Kendrick Lamar's newest single "D.N.A." playing in the background. Bullets are whizzing everywhere, tables are flipping over, and T'Challa notices Klaw trying to escape.
"Investigation in the case is going on expeditiously and effectively".
"The hooligans started heckling the officer and the number of miscreants' swelled". Khan added that after talking to the accused and custodial questioning, "they led us to other accused that were involved".
In this regard, a case under section 302 RPC was registered and investigation was taken up. 20 of the accused have been arrested and more arrests will be made soon,"Munir Khan said". A Special Investigation Team (SIT) was set up to look into the case and speed up the investigation process, a police spokesman was quoted saying in the report.
