United States certifies that Iran is meeting terms of nuclear deal

As a Republican candidate, Trump kept censuring former President Barack Obama for taking part in negotiations with Tehran along with five other world powers, calling the outcome of the nuclear talks "one of the worst deals", the NY businessman has ever seen.

The talking points also cite the arbitrary arrests of Americans visiting Iran and they slam the previous Obama administration for focusing on signing a nuclear deal at the price of ignoring Iranian activities in the Middle East.

This has officials publicly admitting that Iran is complying with the deal, and threatening new sanctions against them anyhow, because that compliance "won't go unpunished".

Zarif said they would discuss Iran's complaint that the United States has not been complying with its part of the deal by failing to lift all sanctions against Iran.

Stressing that the United States was not going soft on Iran, officials said Washington was expected to implement new sanctions that pertain to Iran's ballistic missile programme and fast boat programme.

The Trump administration faced a new congressional deadline Monday to say whether Iran has curbed its nuclear weapons program in line with the accord.

"If it comes to a major violation, or what in the terms of the nuclear deal is called significant nonperformance, then Iran has other options available, including withdrawing from the deal", he added.

Earlier in the day, Trump's national security adviser, Gen. H.R. McMaster, and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin previewed the sanctions in a closed-door meeting with representatives of Washington-based think tanks to which reporters were not invited. Others has also "orchestrated the theft of USA and Western software programs" sold to Iran's government, the Treasury Department said.

"In light of Iran's malign actions since the signing of the JCPOA, the only reasonable conclusion is that the full suspension of USA sanctions is not in the vital national security interests of the United States and that Iran has consistently violated the terms of the JCPOA", the Republican senators wrote.

"Yet when it comes to growing concerns over North Korea's nuclear weapons program, the administration has instead opted for more ineffective sanctions and unsafe threats of military force".

The United States still has a range of non-nuclear-related sanctions on Iran, and Trump has beefed those up. Secretary of Treasury Steven Mnuchin announced that Treasury is using its discretion outside the JCPOA to impose economic sanctions on seven entities and five individuals for aiding Iran's Revolutionary Guard and other Iranian criminal organizations.

The nuclear agreement was negotiated with the participation of other leading countries, including Germany, Russia and China. Opponents urged Trump to pull out of the deal to send Tehran a message over its continued support for terrorist groups.
