Trump voiced concern in a TV interview on Fox News on Friday about what he said was the close relationship between former FBI Director James Comey and Mueller, who was named to take over the Russian Federation investigation after Trump fired Comey. Independents went for Comey over Trump, 47 to 17 percent.
Lawmakers investigating allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 US election have raised questions about whether Comey's May 9 firing was an attempt by Trump to stop the Russia probe.
"My story didn't change, my story was always a straight story, my story was always the truth", Trump said.
Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway muddied the waters a little Friday morning when she told CNN that, while Trump "answered definitively" he has made no tapes, "he left open the possibility that they may exist".
Mr Trump showed concern about that situation as well, telling Fox that Mr Mueller is "very, very good friends with Comey which is bothersome".
"Well I didn't tape him", Trump told Earhardt.

Barcelona defender Javier Mascherano also agreed a one-year suspended sentence with authorities for tax fraud last year. Ronaldo and Ferdinand starred for the Red Devils before the Portuguese left for Real Madrid for £80m in 2009.
Eight percent of respondents said they believe both Trump and Comey, while 21 percent responded that they believe neither of them. "And if you look further back before he heard about that, I think maybe he wasn't admitting that".
These claims were made ahead of Friday's deadline on turning over any recordings of the meetings between the President and the Federal Bureau of Investigation director to the House Intelligence Committee. The timing drew attention away from the release of the Senate's health care bill, which the White House hopes can provide Trump a much-needed legislative victory. More than a half-dozen aides said they were unaware of any recording devices.
Mark Warner of Virginia, top Democrat on the Senate intelligence committee, said, "This administration never ceases to amaze me".
By getting the content of his memos into the news, "I thought that might prompt the appointment of a special counsel", Comey told the US Senate Intelligence Committee.
On Thursday, Trump tweeted, "I did not make, and do not have, any such recordings".
President Trump accused Special Counsel Robert Mueller of hiring "all Hillary Clinton supporters" to staff the investigation into Russia's meddling in the 2016 election.
