Pelosi on calls for new leadership: 'I'm worth the trouble, quite frankly'

The victories could boost Republicans' confidence as they struggle to advance health and tax legislation that has been bogged down by infighting and investigations into whether Trump's campaign colluded with Russian Federation in last year's presidential election.

She said she feels "very confident" in the support she has from her caucus, but claimed ownership over the "timing" for her role as minority leader. And Republicans say just narrowing the margins in red districts still spells a loss.

At a news conference Thursday afternoon, Pelosi defended her leadership against mounting criticism from her own party and attacks from Republicans.

President Donald Trump took to Twitter to celebrate Republican Karen Handel's victory in a Georgia special congressional race that became an expensive national proxy for Washington wars ahead of next year's midterm elections.

"I'm worth the trouble, quite frankly", she said.

A handful of House Democrats - from Rep. Kathleen Rice (D-N.Y.) to Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio), who Pelosi beat for re-election to her leadership post late past year - have raised fears that their party may not be able to win back the House with Pelosi leading the caucus. Many are calling for new leadership. Democrats will need to pick up 24 House seats to take back the majority. They say voters in Republican-leaning districts are motivated by more than a desire to stop Pelosi and Democrats need to work on developing a message that can win them over. She has beat back all comers, including last fall, when Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan of OH ran against her. Ryan fell well short but garnered dozens of votes, enough to underscore dissatisfaction with Pelosi and with her aging leadership team that has left promising young Democrats with few places to rise. The overall messaging of the Democratic Party - more anti-Trump than pro-solutions - is also being criticized.

With Republicans controlling both chambers, and President Donald Trump in the White House, now isn't the right time for new leadership, she said.

"Of course I'm open to a meeting" with Pelosi", Moulton said.
