GOP senator says Iowans might not lose Medicaid

Republicans are fond of falsely saying the Obamacare markets are in this state ― and, however troubled they are, there's no death spiral ― but their bill is designed to create the exact conditions that cause one. He said along with support from President Donald Trump, "I think we're going to get this thing done, put it in conference and hopefully by the August recess really have Obamacare repealed and replaced".

Attempting to thread a very tight needle, Senate Republicans on Thursday released a health-care reform bill meant to undo major parts of the Affordable Care Act while still supporting the public's access to health insurance.

Four conservative senators expressed opposition but openness to talks: Sens. Cotton was among 13 senators who gave input for the bill to U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky.

Sens. Dean Heller of Nevada, facing a competitive 2018 re-election battle, Rob Portman of OH and Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia expressed concerns about the bill's cuts to Medicaid and drug addiction efforts. A White House official said the Trump has pushed his team to stay involved and plans to flex his negotiating muscle, the official said.

"The bill will encourage a lot more of those individuals to buy health insurance", Roy says.

Healthcare stocks closed down 0.1 percent on Friday, clawing back some losses after the sector dropped sharply late in the session on Heller's announcement.

Under Obamacare, the federal government had guaranteed that its funding for adults newly eligible for Medicaid because of the Affordable Care Act would fall to no lower than 90 percent of their costs.

The bill also scales back federal funding for Medicaid - which is more than half the spending for the program at the state level.

Echoing the other four, Heller said he opposes the measure "in this form" but does not rule out backing a version that is changed to his liking.

"Whatever they do, they've got to treat states fairly". Bernie Sanders went so far to call it "by far the most harmful piece of legislation [he's] seen in [his] lifetime". It's that very, very narrow path.

The senator said he would make his final decision based on whether the legislation is better than what is in place today.

For the House of Representatives' version of healthcare, Trump held regular meetings with representatives at the White House.

The Senate proposal is broadly similar to the bill passed by House Republicans last month, with a few notable differences. The House and Senate could change the percentages of federal support for the expansion during years 2020 through 2024 to meet in the middle.

Sen. Marco Rubio said he's invited Scott and state House and Senate leaders to send staff to Washington next week to craft propsed changes.

"There are provisions in this draft that represent an improvement to our current health care system, but it does not appear this draft as written will accomplish the most important promise that we made to Americans: to repeal Obamacare and lower their health-care costs", the senators said in a statement Thursday.
