Almost three years after former Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson shot and killed Michael Brown on Canfield Drive, the city has agreed settle a wrongful death lawsuit with the family for $1.5 million.
The $1.5 million awarded this week to the parents of Michael Brown is the latest of several large settlements involving black suspects who were killed by police, but it's far from the largest. Brown was shot and killed by Ferguson police officer Wilson in August 2014. Wilson was cleared of wrongdoing, but the shooting led to months of protests in the St. Louis suburb.
Ferguson, Jackson and Wilson denied the allegations.
A jury declined to indict Mr Wilson, who has since left the police force, after finding there was sufficient evidence to prove he had been attacked by Michael Brown. However, a report this morning fromthe St. Louis Post-Dispatch - citing Ferguson city attorney Apollo Carey - revealed the settlement's dollar amount, which apparently will be paid by the city's insurance company "on behalf of multiple defendants".
