Mr Thackeray said that Sena never played caste-based politics.
On Friday, Shiv Sena had said it would recommend eminent agriculture scientist M S Swaminathan's name for the highest post if the BJP was not ready for the RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat's candidature.
"We fully support Kovind".
When asked what made him agree to back Kovind, the Sena chief said, "We have studied his personality and found him to be a very simple and a decent human being". Thackeray had Monday taken umbrage against the BJP's decision of putting up a Dalit face as the Presidential nominee by stating that this was being done to pander to Dalit votes.
The Shiv Sena on Monday remained non-committal on whether or not it will support the BJPs nominee for the Presidential election, Ram Nath Kovind.
Sardesai represents the Goa Forward Party (GFP), which is part of the BJP-led ruling coalition.

Though the main opposition Congress party, Left parties, Bahujan Samajwadi Party ( BSP), Rashtriya Janata Dal ( RJD), and Janata Dal (United) have not extended support to Kovind, other opposition parties like Odisha's Biju Janata Dal (BJD), and Andhra's YSR Congress Party have supported Kovind's candidature.
On Kashmir issue, Shah said the state's PDP-BJP government was working on a solution which will "change the current picture". "One may have political differences with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee but nobody should try to take political advantage of the situation there", it added.
