The tensions and the complexity of the Syrian civil war have been escalated by the shooting down of a Syrian warplane by a U.S. fighter jet on Sunday and the same-day missile attack by Iran's Revolutionary Guards Corps from inside Iran at Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) targets in Syria.
Senior Guard commanders said on Monday that the missile strikes were meant to send a message to "terrorists" who carried out attacks in Tehran two weeks ago as well as their regional and worldwide supporters, a reference to Saudi Arabia and the US.
