The tensions and the complexity of the Syrian civil war have been escalated by the shooting down of a Syrian warplane by a U.S. fighter jet on Sunday and the same-day missile attack by Iran's Revolutionary Guards Corps from inside Iran at Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) targets in Syria.

Senior Guard commanders said on Monday that the missile strikes were meant to send a message to "terrorists" who carried out attacks in Tehran two weeks ago as well as their regional and worldwide supporters, a reference to Saudi Arabia and the US.

Khamenei took to Instagram on Sunday, where he uploaded an edited video that begins with the dramatic footage from the attack inside the Iranian parliament and the ornate mausoleum of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini on June 7.

Russia, like Iran an ally of President Bashar al-Assad, issued a warning of its own to the United States in response to the downing of the Syrian jet, saying on Monday it would view as targets any planes flying west of the Euphrates River, though it stopped short of saying it would shoot any down.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard says all six ballistic missiles it launched at Islamic State militants in Syria earlier this week hit their targets. And the big concern, of course, with Iranian missiles would be longer-range missiles - ones capable, say, of reaching Israel.

"Our enemies should know that Tehran is not London or Paris", Hajizadeh stated, a reference to the European capitals coming under numerous terrorist attacks over the past years.

"The Saudis and Americans are especially receivers of this message", Gen. Ramazan Sharif of the Revolutionary Guard told Iranian state TV in an interview.

That attack marked the first to hit Iran, shocking its residents who believed the chaos engulfing the rest of the Middle East would not find them in the Shiite-majority nation.

The Guard, which is also involved in the fight against the Islamic State group in neighboring Iraq, controls Iran's missile program.

Ya'ari noted that Iranian officials, trying to cover up the extent of the failure, have been repeating over and over in the past few hours how successful the missile strike was.

Back in February, the White House said it had put Iran "on notice" for test-firing a ballistic missile, taking an aggressive posture toward Tehran.

On several occasions in recent weeks, warplanes of the US-led coalition have also struck pro-regime forces to prevent them advancing from the Al Tanf garrison in southeastern Syria at a spot where the country's borders join Iraq and Jordan. The regional and worldwide sponsors of the terrorists must receive the revealing message of the assault, ' he said. Iranian officials complained the new sanctions violate the spirit of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, otherwise known as the Iran nuclear deal, however, ballistic missiles are not included in the agreement.
