West, the star of the popular and campy 1960s "Batman" TV show, died on Friday after a short battle with leukemia, his agent said.
Burt Ward, Adam West's Robin, told Variety: "I am devastated at the loss of one my very dearest friends".
"The tone of our first show, by Lorenzo Semple Jr., was one of absurdity and tongue in cheek to the point that I found it irresistible", West said about Batman. This is a terribly unexpected loss of my lifelong friend. "I will forever miss him".
Actor Val Kilmer, who played Batman in a later movie, tweeted: "Ah dear Adam West".
West's "Batman", which ran for three seasons on ABC from 1966 to 1968, was known for its flashy graphics and over-the-top acting. "He was truly the Bright Night", said Ward.
Fans and celebrities paid tribute Saturday to Adam West to honor the veteran actor renowned for bringing the caped crime fighter to life in the classic 1960's "Batman" TV series. "There are no words to describe how much we'll miss him".

Tributes to the actor poured in via social media following news of his death. His family made a statement on Facebook that West always saw himself as "The Bright Knight" and he will always be their hero.
He is survived by his wife Marcelle, six children, five grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren.

Filmmakers and producers constantly anxious that audiences would be taken out of the story when Bruce Wayne walks onscreen, essentially limiting West to Batman-related roles if he wanted to find work.
The role was so iconic for West that it essentially killed his career and the actor struggled to work in the years following the show's cancellation.
"[I'm] really a lucky actor because I was able to be part of something that has that kind of longevity that you talk about", he said.
