It marks the fourth straight year the Blue Devils have produced a top-three pick.
Bam Adebayo was the last lottery pick; he went 14th to Miami, joining De'Aaron Fox and Malik Monk in the National Basketball Association.
Butler, one of the league's most dynamic two-way players, joined forces again with Thibodeau, who coached the Bulls for five seasons before being fired in 2015. Boston received the No. 3 overall pick and a future first-round pick.
The Philadelphia 76ers selected Markelle Fultz as the top pick in the NBA Draft on Thursday night.
Fultz is one of dozens of freshmen college players to be selected in Thursday's Draft.
Fultz said it's the pictures of the things that mean the most to him. In return, the Bulls got last year's fifth overall pick, point guard Kris Dunn, and used this year's No. 7 selection on sweet-shooting Finnish big Lauri Markkanen.
The Los Angeles Lakers had the second pick in the draft and took UCLA point guard Lonzo Ball.

Fultz averaged 23.2 points last season at Washington, tops among freshmen, and added 5.9 assists and 5.7 rebounds per game, the only Division I player to reach those stats. The Sixers acquired the No. 1 pick in a deal with Boston for the third pick, plus an additional first-rounder in either 2018 or 2019.
No surprise here. The 76ers gave up an extra first round pick to acquire the player they felt, like many others, is the best player in the draft.
Just like at the 2016 NBA Draft, one year later the NBA gathered at the Barclays Center to disperse the incoming rookie class.
After the announcement of Ball's selection by the Lakers, he said he "just wants to get on the court". Philadelphia was a historically bad team, while crafty draft picks and limited talent essentially insured a good position on draft night - and did so on a yearly basis. Josh Jackson of Kansas went to Phoenix as No. 4 and De'Aaron Fox of Kentucky went to Sacramento as the No. 5 pick. "It's something that nearly all kids dream of and for me to do this, it just goes down in the history book and it's a milestone for me".
Cut from the varsity team as a sophomore at DeMatha Catholic High School in 2013 because he was only 5-foot-9, Fultz dominated opponents on the junior varsity level then continued his stellar performances in his final two years at high school. They led a record-setting run of one-and-dones in the National Basketball Association draft.
NY is conveniently located between both cities and 76ers fans have made the trip here frequently over the last couple years as their team has had high picks - including the No. 1 choice the last two years.
