JD-U extends support to Kovind's candidature

One of the strong names in favour of unity amongst the Opposition, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, has made a decision to side with the NDA candidate for the upcoming Presidential elections, former Bihar Governor Ran Nath Kovind, top leaders of his party said on Wednesday.

Thackeray had earlier said that his party will not back Kovind if his candidature is aimed at garnering Dalit votes.

West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi was given additional charge of Bihar.

The Centre has accorded Z+ security cover of National Security Guard (NSG) commandos to NDA Presidential nominee Ram Nath Kovind. So far, nearly all of the NDA allies, including the Shiv Sena, have extended their support to Kovind's candidature. "We have confidence in Kovind that he would discharge his duties as a good administrator", the former CM said.Meanwhile, the supporters of the AIADMK (Amma) deputy general secretary TTV Dhinakaran met at his residence on Thursday morning to decide on the next course of faction. Mr Mukherjee's five-year term as President will come to an end on July 24.

He will not just write letters to the legislators, but meet them in the state capitals and engage them in discussions on issues confronting the country", sources said, who added that Ananth Kumar, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and a battery of BJP leaders will assist Kovind in his campaigning.
