Panneerselvam said BJP National President Amit Shah had sought support from him for Kovind and the matter was discussed with senior functionaries of the faction on Thursday, besides MPs and MLAs owing allegiance to him.

For the record, the Congress has said the possibility of nominating a candidate to run against Kovind will be confirmed only after the June 22 meeting. "The idea was to come together across the same room to discuss the issue and some political parties made a decision to take their own path and that happens often", a senior Congress leader said requesting anonymity.

Asked whether the party would support Kovind, he had said "That also will be decided by (party) general secretary".

Though the Left parties are aware that the numbers are loaded against them, they are firm on a "political contest" in the election to the highest constitutional office.

Gandhi had taken the initiative to talk to opposition parties to evolve a consensus candidate in the presidential election.

Now it is the NDA that is united after some initial signs of differences, with at least three additional major parties-JD (U), AIADMK, BJD-- having already declared their support for Kovind. "We will go by whatever is decided in the meet tomorrow", Prasad said. Modi had also praised Nitish Kumar for enacting total prohibition law in Bihar when he was in Patna for the 350th birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Gobind Singh. "Whoever would be the protector of the Constitution should be above caste and religion", he said adding that his party would attend the opposition's meeting on Thursday. "I also appeal to other parties to support Kovind".

Efforts were on to ensure that the NCP did not stray, as the Sharad Pawar-led party held internal discussions to decide on its strategy for the July 17 presidential election.

With the opposition yet to name its candidate, former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar met Sonia Gandhi at her residence yesterday evening, fuelling speculation over her emerging as the front runner.
