Mr Warmbier was carried off a medical transport plane that landed in Cincinnati and was having treatment at a hospital in the city today.

It is good to have him returned to his family and to better medical care.

Otto Frederick Warmbier (C), a University of Virginia student who was detained in North Korea since January 2016, is taken to North Korea's top court in Pyongyang, North Korea, in this photo released by Kyodo March 16, 2016.

Tillerson said in a statement that the U.S. State Department continues to have discussions with the DPRK regarding three other U.S. citizens reported detained.

North Korea told a USA official that Warmbier contracted botulism and slipped into the coma after taking a sleeping pill, a senior State Department official told CNN. He was arrested in January 2016 and accused of trying to steal a propaganda poster from an employee area of his hotel.

Tensions have escalated on the Korean peninsula over North Korea's nuclear and missile tests and its vow to develop a nuclear-tipped missile capable of hitting the US mainland, presenting US President Donald Trump with perhaps his most pressing security worry. He is now en route to OH where he will be reunited with his family, the State Department said. Sadly, he is coma and we have told that he has been in that condition since March 2016. He was freed Tuesday.

Former NBA basketball star Dennis Rodman, left, towers over North Korean children during his visit to Mangyongdae, the birth place of late North Korean leader Kim Il Sung on Wednesday, June 14, 2017, in Pyongyang, North Korea. His parents say he's in a coma.

But State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said the visit "had nothing to do with the release". The North Koreans said that he came down with a case of botulism soon after his sentencing, and that he was given a sleeping pill and fell into a coma, and he didn't wake up from that.

Yun met North Korea's ambassador to the United Nations on June 6 and was told about Warmbier's condition, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Typically, cargo for Qatar stops at Dubai's massive deep-water Jebel Ali port, then gets put on smaller boats heading to Doha . Analysts estimate that a political standoff between Qatar and other Arab states will cost the airline heavily.

Such direct consultations between the two governments are rare. His family says he is in a coma. The State Department representative "immediately demanded the North Koreans release Warmbier on humanitarian grounds". The U.S. does not have diplomatic relations with the reclusive country and works through Sweden to deal with North Korean officials. "We strongly, strongly suggest that Americans do not go to North Korea". Warmbier was evacuated Tuesday.

Warmbier would have graduated in May. "Fred, Cindy, and the Warmbier family have been remarkably strong throughout this ordeal". He said Warmbier, of Wyoming, in suburban Cincinnati, was en route to the U.S.

In the past, North Korea has held out until senior US officials or statesmen came to personally bail out detainees.

Otto Warmbier is an economics student from the University of Virginia, originally from Cincinnati, Ohio. Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown of Cleveland said the country's "despicable actions ... must be condemned". Things took a turn for the worse while he was on a trip to North Korea. He is on medevac flight on his way home. He had been serving a 15-year prison term with hard labor for alleged anti-state acts.

"Well, I'm pretty sure he's pretty much happy with the fact that I'm over here trying to accomplish something that we both need", Rodman said in Beijing when asked if Trump was aware of the trip.

He appeared emotional at a news conference a month later, in which he tearfully confessed to trying to take the sign as a "trophy" for a United States church, adding: "The aim of my task was to harm the motivation and work ethic of the Korean people".

Tillerson, at a U.S. Senate hearing on Tuesday, declined to comment on Warmbier's condition.

Mr Warmbier's release was announced while Dennis Rodman - President Trump and Kim Jong-un's only mutual "friend" - was visiting North Korea. The Department of State continues to have discussions with the DPRK regarding three other US citizens reported detained. The announcement came shortly after former National Basketball Association player Dennis Rodman arrived in Pyongyang for a return visit to North Korea.

Warmbier was not seen in public after his March 2016 sentencing.
