Airstrikes in Syria suspended by Australia after US shoots down Syrian jet

Monday's tensions between Russian Federation and the USA erupted after a US fighter jet shot down a Syrian warplane, the first such incident in Syria's more than six-year-old civil war.

Col John Thomas, a spokesman for US Central Command, said there were no US forces in the immediate vicinity but that the SDF was under threat for more than two hours.

Russian Federation also warned on Monday that it would treat US-led coalition jets in Syria that fly west of the Euphrates River as targets.

Though Australia operates in both the Syrian and Iraqi conflicts, the air force mostly conducts operations in Iraq, particularly around the city of Mosul, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.

This is the second time the US has shot down an Iranian drone in less than a month.

An army statement said the airplane pilot was missing.

BEIRUT - Russia on Monday threatened aircraft from the US -led coalition in Syrian-controlled airspace and suspended a hotline meant to avoid collisions in retaliation for the USA military shooting down a Syrian warplane.

Those forces, which are aligned with the U.S.in the campaign against the Islamic State group, warned Syrian government troops to stop their attacks or face retaliation.

The drone, a Shaheed-129, was shot down by an F-15E Strike Eagle after it "displayed hostile intent and advanced on coalition forces", the US military said in a statement.

Russian Federation responded by saying its surface-to-air missile systems in Syria would hereby track manned and unmanned aircraft from the USA -led anti-ISIS coalition if they go west of the Euphrates River.

"As a precautionary measure, Australian defence force strike operations into Syria have temporarily ceased", Australia's Department of Defence said in a statement.

But while National Defence says it is monitoring the situation, it otherwise wouldn't comment Monday on where the Canadian planes have been flying in Syria and whether they are in any increased risk of danger.

Russian Federation has responded by suspending a flight coordination hotline and has also threatened to target USA coalition planes. This marks the third downing of a pro-Assad aircraft this month.

It was not known what exactly was hit and Iran has provided no details. "We have a channel to be able to do that", he said.

The drone was assessed to be armed and in firing range of USA troops.
