New Zealand beats Oracle in America's Cup opener in Bermuda

"I'm not happy with how we sailed today, even though we've got two points on the board", Burling said.

"It's pretty obvious these guys are faster and we need to make some serious changes", Jimmy Spithill, Oracle Team USA's skipper said at a post-race news conference.

During Race Four there was a moment of tension when it looked as though Team NZ might collide with Oracle. "I think these next five days will be the most important five days of the campaign".

Burling and Spithill were locked in a colossal game of chicken, with the two boats close enough for the pair to shake hands at one point, with Team New Zealand edging it.

Skipper Jimmy Spithill, who is looking to win the America's Cup for the third time before he turns 38, started with an Instagram post of a cartoon of a bald eagle in an American flag motif digging its talons into a surprised kiwi bird, accompanied by the hashtag #battleofbermuda.

Burling said that will be the team's approach over the next five days.

Publicly both teams say they can do more with their boats.

New Zealand are closing in on winning the America's Cup, having claimed four of the eight races they need to recapture the world's oldest worldwide sporting competition.

Burling, the 26-year-old whose pre-start prowess was called into question during challenger qualifying, won the start of the second race and New Zealand steadily built their lead.

Russia: US Planes in Syria Are Now 'Targets'
A senior United States defense official tells CNN the so-called "de-confliction line" remains open with Russian Federation. Coalition aircraft will continue flying throughout Syria, although some assets will be repositioned, said Col.

The match-up between ORACLE TEAM USA and Emirates Team New Zealand is a rematch of the 2013 America's Cup Match in which ORACLE TEAM USA staged what many call the greatest comeback in sport.

Emirates Team New Zealand Skipper Glenn Ashby was quick to highlight they had plenty to improve and work on over the next 10 days if the team are to be ultimately successful. We need to use those days wisely.

Once again the Kiwi boat was faster right around the track and that speed allied to impeccable tactics and boat-handling proved irresistible.

As for Oracle's foil selection, "I thought we made a good step forward", Spithill said.

The two wins gave New Zealand a psychological boost as the Kiwis try to win the "Auld Mug" back after losing to Oracle in San Francisco in 2013.

“Whats positive is we won the Qualifiers and weve taken race wins off team New Zealand. "We basically handed that first race to them".

"It's a lot harder for them if we keeping moving, if we stand still, they'll catch us". The Kiwis used the same foils they did in speeding to two victories on Saturday while the American-backed crew appeared to use two different foils.

Trailing the Kiwi boat, Spithill went for the split at the gate as he chased hard in pursuit of Burling, victor of the Red Bull Youth America's Cup in 2013. "We'll keep battling away and aim to get the remaining six wins needed as soon as possible".
