"The tunnel is about 12 metres long and we suspect it took more than a week to build", said the head of Kerobokan prison Tony Nainggolan, adding that police believed the men were still in Bali and not far from the prison.

Of the other escapees Bulgarian Dimitar Nikolov Iliev was jailed for seven years for money laundering, Sayed Mohammad Said was jailed for 14 years on drug charges and Malaysian Tee Kok King bin Tee Kam Sai was jailed for seven years on drug charges. They tunneled their way out. "We found two buckets, some towels and sandals near it (the tunnel entrance)", he said.

Details are still sketchy of exactly how the escape went down and the four escapees are still on the run.

Australian Shaun Edward Davidson and the tunnel through which it is believed the Kerobokan inmates escaped.

The Sydney Morning Herald (SMH) quoted a source as saying the escaped foreigners were last seen during sahur time, when Muslims eat to prepare for their Ramadan fast. "It is filled with water", the source said.

An investigation had been launched after around 350 inmates broke out of an overcrowded jail on Sumatra island in Riau Province last month.
