Search and rescue workers found the bodies inside the USS Fitzgerald after it returned to port at the Yokosuka Naval Base south of Tokyo, and water was pumped out of flooded areas on the crushed starboard side of the ship.

YOKOSUKA, Japan - The bodies of missing sailors were found in flooded compartments of the USS Fitzgerald, which came close to sinking after a collision with a container ship off Japan tore a gash under the warship's waterline, the U.S. Navy's Seventh Fleet commander said on Sunday.

Sykes says her son told her that the men sleeping on bunks above and below him were among those who died.

"Families of the deceased are now being alerted and provided the help they need during this challenging time", the 7th Fleet stated.

"This was a severe emergency, but the ship's crew was swift and responsive and I can't tell you how proud I am of the crew for what they did to save the ship", Aucoin said.

US and Japanese aircraft and surface ships launched a search looking for the unaccounted-for sailors after the collision. "So the water flow was tremendous, and so there wasn't a lot of time in those spaces that were open to the sea".

Damaged part of USS Fitzgerald is seen at the U.S. Naval base in Yokosuka, southwest of Tokyo Sunday, June 18, 2017.

The Navy isn't speculating on any cause so far. The USS Fitzgerald was back at its home port in Japan after colliding before dawn Saturday with a container ship four times its size, while the coast guard and Japanese and USA military searched for seven sailors missing after the crash. The weather was clear with a swell of about 6 feet at the time.

The blasts were the first-ever terror attack globally where RDX was used on such a large scale after the Second World War. The court announced that the evidence by the CBI was also enough to convict Feroz, the second name on the accused list.

The remains are being taken to the Naval Hospital Yokosuka for identification. He said he would order a full and thorough investigation.

The other two were being treated for lacerations and bruises. Most congestion occurs in the early hours of the day, and fast currents make it a tricky area that requires experience and skill to navigate.

The container ship's left bow was dented and scraped, and accident investigators from the Japanese transport ministry found further damage below its waterline.

Multiple investigations are under way to determine how a technologically advanced USA warship was not able to get out of the way of a huge and cumbersome container ship, even if it had the right of way. Many scratches were also seen in the frontal area.

On Saturday, Trump said in a Twitter message, "Thoughts and prayers with the sailors of USS Fitzgerald and their families".

I t was unclear how the collision happened.

All of the ACX Crystal's 20-member Filipino crew were safe, according to Japanese shipping company Nippon Yusen K.K., which operates the ship.

The coast guard questioned crew members of the ACX Crystal, and is treating the collision as a case of possible professional negligence, said Masayuki Obara, a regional coast guard official.

"We are struck by deep sorrow", expressing condolences and sympathy "straight from my heart" to the victims and the injured, Abe said in the statement.
