Scalise arrived at the hospital in a critical state, facing "an imminent risk of death", Sava said.
In a statement posted to his Twitter account, Mr Scalise was said to be "more responsive, and is speaking with his loved ones". He said doctors have turned down Scalise's sedation levels enough that the lawmaker has been able to respond to family members visiting him in the hospital.
