The future of Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general, came under doubt Friday when Trump attacked him in a tweet and a U.S. official confirmed that Rosenstein has told colleagues he may have to recuse himself from the inquiry because he'd criticised James Comey in a memo before Trump fired the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director.

"I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director!"

He also tweeted: "Despite the phony Witch Hunt going on in America, the economic & jobs numbers are great".

President Trump acknowledged publicly for the first time Friday that he is under investigation in the expanding inquiry into Russian influence in the election, and he appeared to attack the integrity of the Justice Department official in charge of it. The source spoke on condition of anonymity.

Earlier this week, a friend of Trump's said the president was considering firing Mueller - a task that would be complicated by Justice Department regulations, which say that only the attorney general may fire a special counsel and only if there is good cause.

Rosenstein had written a memo critical of James Comey's handling of the Hillary Clinton email server. Trump cited the memo in firing Comey.

The tweet raises many unanswered questions and follows a series of posts to Twitter by Trump in the past two days complaining about reports that special counsel Robert Mueller is investigating whether the president engaged in obstruction of justice.

But Trump later said in a television interview that he fired Comey at least in part because he was frustrated over the Russian Federation investigation Comey was leading.

Rosenstein, 52, has said little publicly, but a cryptic statement he released late Thursday captured some of the strain and frustration he is probably feeling about the numerous unauthorised leaks about the Russian Federation investigation that have angered the president, according to several of his colleagues and friends.

Polanski fled to his native France in 1978 the day before the sentencing for the crime of having unlawful sex with a minor. But she insisted that Polanski had done his time and had since suffered the sort of shaming that was once loaded on her.

"The message the president is sending through his tweets is that he believes the rule of law doesn't apply to him and that anyone who thinks otherwise will be fired", Feinstein said.

"That's undemocratic on its face and a blatant violation of the president's oath of office".

Trump is under increasing pressure on the Russian Federation probe.

In another indication of the seriousness of the probe, Michael Cohen, a personal attorney to Trump, said he has retained attorney Stephen Ryan, a former assistant U.S. attorney, to represent him in the ongoing probes.

Trump allies have been questioning whether Mueller can lead an unbiased probe, given that some members of his team have made campaign contributions to Democratic candidates.

"[Vice President] Mike Pence hired a lawyer, everybody else is hiring a lawyer". Pence headed the Trump transition until inauguration day.

The transition official said the organization has also separately asked the General Services Administration to preserve records from the Trump transition that were transferred to its facilities after Trump's inauguration. The transition, a nonprofit structurally separate from the Trump campaign, continues to operate with a small staff.

The Washington Post reported on Wednesday that investigators were looking into possible obstruction of justice. He writes angry impulsive tweets that harm his own legal and political position and, along with his inner circle, is now attacking virtually everyone involved in the special counsel's investigation.
