Mayweather confirmed the bout - which will take place under normal boxing rules despite McGregor having never boxed either amateur or professionally - on his official Twitter feed.
Mayweather retired for the first time in 2008 after 39 fights.
White made an appearance on SportsCenter and said that UFC champion McGregor firmly believes that he can defeat Mayweather.
UFC president Dana White told ESPN: "We've been in negotiations now for a while and to be honest the negotiation went smooth".
The pair will face off in a light middleweight boxing match in Las Vegas on August 26th.
White said McGregor would be training for the fight in his homeland with Irish boxers.
The event is expected to be a pay-for-view blockbuster, and organizers are hoping it can challenge the 4.6 million pay-per-view buys for Mayweather-Pacquiao.

Mayweather will come off a two-year retirement in a bout that McGregor has been pushing for almost that long.
Mayweather last fought in September 2015, beating Andre Berto and then announcing his retirement.
Mayweather will reportedly be paid over 100 million United States dollars for the contest, which will be broadcast on pay-per-view networks across the world.
Though oddsmakers make Mayweather a big favorite, the thought of the fight has excited many in the MMA world.
The boxing format heavily favors the undefeated Mayweather (49-0, 26 KOs), whom many consider to be the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
"Realistically if we were just putting up a number and didn't have to take bets on it, Floyd would be 100-1", Bogdanovich said.
