The leader of Britain's House of Commons says the state opening of Parliament will take place on June 21.
May began talks with the Northern Ireland-based party to see if they can create an alliance to push through the Conservative Party's agenda after a disastrous snap election left her short of a majority in Parliament.
Major, who helped to bring about that peace, said he was concerned that May's arrangement with the DUP could pitch the province back into turmoil by persuading "hard men" on both sides of the divide to return to violence. "And the danger is that however much any government tries, they will not be seen to be impartial if they are locked into a parliamentary deal at Westminster with one of the Northern Ireland parties".
Some fear the viability of Northern Ireland's fragile peace - which has held since 1998 after decades of inter-community violence known as The Troubles - could rest on the arrangement, with doubts around the United Kingdom government's neutrality.
The PM told the backbench 1922 Committee on Monday that a deal with the DUP would not affect powersharing talks in Northern Ireland or LGBT rights.
Sinn Fein, along with the other four main parties in Northern Ireland, has been invited to Number 10 in attempt to break the deadlock over power-sharing talks.
An election in March saw the pro-British, Protestant, conservative DUP finish narrowly ahead of Catholic socialists Sinn Fein.
If a joint government can not be realised, then the two parties should at least agree on a common stance and share responsibility for the Brexit talks, to show the world that Britain is united.

He could order Rosenstein to do so, but under federal regulations Rosenstein would need to show "good cause" to fire Mueller. The president also praised his own use of social media, tweeting about how he is able to bypass traditional news media.
"My preoccupation is that time is passing, it is passing quicker than anyone believes because the subjects we have to deal with are extraordinarily complex", he added. An agreement to restore devolved power-sharing government in Stormont must be reached by the 29 June deadline.
Meanwhile, Downing Street said that talks between Theresa May and the DUP over a confidence and supply deal had been "constructive".
Sinn Fein's Stormont leader Michelle O'Neill said: "I will be making it very clear that any deal between the Tories and the DUP can not be allowed to undermine the Good Friday and subsequent agreements".
"I confirmed to President Macron that the timetable for the Brexit negotiation remains on course and will begin next week", May said after her meeting with the new French leader, who will be a key player in the Brexit talks.
"In reality, the government is here simply because the DUP allow it to be so", Long said, according to the BBC.
Brexit is another complicating factor in the mix.
May had called the vote early in hopes of strengthening her majority going into talks on exiting the European Union.
Northern Ireland's frontier with the Republic of Ireland will be the UK's only land border with the European Union after Brexit.
