The DACA program provides temporary deportation relief and work permits for those who were brought to the USA as children, have a clean record and undergo a background check.
The Trump administration surprised numerous president's critics on Thursday night when it suggested that the administration plans to leave President Obama's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program in place more or less untouched, despite a campaign dedicated to demonizing undocumented immigrants and promising their deportation.
South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT), a national South Asian racial justice and civil rights organization, condemns the Trump administration's decision to rescind Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA), an Obama-era program that would have enabled undocumented parents of US-citizen children to qualify for temporary protection from deportation and work authorization.
The memo also quietly mentioned that "t$3 he June 15, 2012 memorandum that created the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program will remain in effect".
That's not enough for the Immigrant Legal Resource Center in San Francisco, which said in a statement Thursday, "The administration's announcement that the original 2012 DACA would not be affected by this announcement falls short of a concrete commitment that DACA will indefinitely continue". "There has been no final determination made about the DACA program, which the president has stressed needs to be handled with compassion and with heart", said Jonathan Hoffman, assistant secretary for public affairs at the DHS, according to the New York Times. In some cases, the immigrants didn't know they were in the country illegally.
But in an Associated Press interview in April, Trump said his administration is "not after the dreamers, we are after the criminals" and that "The dreamers should rest easy". But if DACA is ended, the status that allows them back into the United States might expire as well, immigration experts have warned. "The rescission blocks much-needed deportation relief for our families, as they will be vulnerable to Trump's deportation machine", said Cesar Vargas, co-director of the Dream Action Coalition.
SHAPIRO: Ultimately, what does this mean for people who are now DACA recipients or who might qualify for it but have been afraid to apply?
The announcement was made when similar Obama administration's program, Deferred Action for Parents of American was cancelled by the Trump administration.
"There are a lot of community members that are immigrants here that are on the program".

George North continued his indifferent form by failing to claim cleanly when sliding back in a bid to sweep up a kick in behind. Key man: Leigh Halfpenny kicked seven kicks from seven attempts to lay the foundations of this much-needed Lions victory.
Since taking office, Trump has expressed empathy for the participants often called "dreamers", many of whom have no memory of living anywhere but the United States.
"I think what we are seeing is contradictions", Corbett said.
The program to protect parents was announced by President Barack Obama in November 2014 but was never fully launched.
And that narrative doesn't exactly sway immigration activists who fiercely oppose the administration, either.
The DACA program stipulates measures that would protect young immigrants while Congress considers wider immigration legislation that will be ringing about the desired changes to the DACA legislation. It's also what protects people who signed up for the program from deportation, and allows them to apply for work permits. The Supreme Court deadlocked, 4-4, on a challenge to that ruling, but the Trump administration's decision officially ends the litigation.
During the campaign, Trump repeatedly agreed with that sentiment.
In February, an undocumented immigrant was deported to Mexico by USA border officials in what was reportedly the first instance of a DACA recipient being forced out of the US under President Trump. "He still has four years to go", she said.
"It was a way for me to work, get a driver's license, and pay taxes", Powell said.
"However, this should serve as a lesson for the community. now more than ever we should organize". The protection can be revoked at any time and some young immigrants have lost their DACA protections after being arrested for a crime.
