The Navy, Japanese maritime defense vessels and the coast guard were working to stabilize the destroyer as it headed to shore, said Navy chief Adm. John Richardson.

According to the coast guard here, the collision occurred about 100 km southwest of Yokosuka, south of Tokyo, and was first reported by the Philippine container vessel at around 2:25 a.m. local time.

In the aftermath, however, the Navy said the Fitzgerald suffered damage on its starboard side, above and below the water line.

"It remains uncertain how long it will take to gain access to the spaces once the ship is pier side.to methodically continue the search for the missing", the statement said. US aircraft is assisting in the effort, along with several Japanese helicopters and one plane, the 7th Fleet said.

The collision occurred near Yokosuka, a Japanese port city that is home to the U.S. 7th Fleet, which comprises up to 80 submarines and ships and including the USS Fitzgerald.

President Donald Trump has thanked Japan for its help in the search for seven Navy sailors who are missing after their US destroyer collided with a container ship. Dive teams will inspect the damage after the Fitzgerald's return to port in Yokosuka, Japan.

"This has been a hard day", Vice Adm. Joseph P. Aucoin, the commander of the 7th Fleet, said in a statement.

By mid-afternoon local time, it said that all flooding on board the USS Fitzgerald was under control.

The Philippine ship is 29,060 tons and is 222.6 meters (730 feet) long, the coast guard said.

Rita Schrimsher, whose 23-year-old grandson Jackson Schrimsher was aboard the ship, told the Associated Press about the agony of waiting for news from Japan until he contacted her to say he was safe.

The Fitzgerald had limited propulsion and a United States defence official said there was flooding in three compartments.

About 200 sailors were aboard the ship at the time of the collision. US Naval aircraft are also being readied to help, said the statement.
