Shooter of Republican lawmakers a fan of leftist Sanders

Hodgkinson apparently carried a list of Republican Congressmen in his pocket while he shot several people at a Congressional Baseball Game practice on Wednesday. The attacker, who was shot by Scalise's security detail and later died, was an IL man whose social media postings showed anger at Trump and the Republicans. South Carolina Rep. Jeff Duncan has said he said he was preparing to leave the baseball field when a man politely asked him whether it was a Democratic or Republican team before quietly walking off.

Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, was shot dead by Capitol Police after he opened fire on congressmen Wednesday in Alexandria, Va.

Pelosi pointed out that she herself has faced verbal attacks and threats aplenty, including phone calls to her home she blamed on ads critical of her that are airing now in a Georgia House district where a hard-fought special election will take place next week.

Hodgkinson said repeatedly that she saw no signs her husband was planning violence.

"I think that an excellent recovery is a good possibility", Dr. Jack Sava, director of trauma at MedStar Washington Hospital Center said at a news conference Friday afternoon.

U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise, a Republican from Louisiana, was among those shot by Hodgkinson.

A huge ovation came from the crowd, which swelled to a record 24,959, when Special Agent David Bailey, one of the Capitol Police officers injured in the attack on Republicans at their ball practice, threw out the first pitch. She did not want to discuss her husband's politics.

Scalise and lobbyist Matt Mika remained in critical condition Friday.

According to his Facebook page, Hodgkinson was a fervent supporter of Sanders, the feisty independent who nearly defeated Hillary Clinton past year in a tough fight for the Democratic White House nomination. I can't wrap my head around it.

When Hodgkinson left for the Washington area, his wife figured he just needed a break since their daughter and 2-year-old granddaughter had just moved into their home and usually spent all day with him.

Stephen Brennwald, an attorney and YMCA regular, said he thought it was odd that Hodgkinson never exercised or wore workout clothes.

Bernie Sanders, who lost the Democratic nomination for president to Hillary Clinton past year, said on the Senate floor that he had just found out that the suspect had volunteered for his campaign.
