An hour later, Trump was back at it, calling the investigation the "single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history".
It was unclear whether his tweet about being under investigation was based on direct knowledge or new media reports that suggest Mueller is examining whether the president obstructed justice by firing Comey.
Late Thursday, reports surfaced Vice President Mike Pence hired a lawyer to assist him through probes into whether there were ties between Trump's election campaign and Russian Federation. The Washington Post reported Wednesday that the investigators were looking into possible obstruction of justice.
Mueller's friendship with Comey and Mueller's selection of several investigators who have made campaign donations to Democrats are among the issues Gingrich is raising as problematic.
United States national intelligence director Daniel Coats, National Security Agency chief Mike Rogers, and Richard Ledgett, who recently quit as NSA deputy director, have agreed to speak to investigators, the Post reported.
That prompted Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to appoint Robert Mueller - himself a former Federal Bureau of Investigation director - as special counsel the following week.
Mueller took over the Russian Federation probe in May after Trump fired James Comey. But Trump certainly has one thing right: His presidency is imperiled so long as Mueller compels witnesses to testify, accumulates written evidence and traces the myriad of ties between the Trump team and Russians.
It goes on to say that if those efforts "are unsuccessful", the White House counsel and the attorney general should then "consult" with each other "to determine whether to recommend that the President invoke the privilege".
Xbox One X: "All of your games will play better"
Microsoft likely makes far more money from Xbox Live Gold subscriptions, for instance, than it does from Xbox One hardware sales. Original Xbox backwards compatibility coming to Xbox One was one of the highlights of Microsoft's press conference at E3 2017 .
Of course, "unnamed officials" are the source of the story.
The Washington Examiner reported on June 7 that Comey "closely coordinated" with Mueller, who had been named special counsel on May 17, on Comey's testimony before the Senate intelligence committee.
Moscow has denied US intelligence agencies' conclusion that it interfered in last year's USA presidential election campaign to try to tilt the vote in Trump's favour.
Mueller is interviewing as early as this week three top intelligence officials as part of the probe, the Post reported, citing "five people briefed on the requests".
Supporters of Trump condemned the news leaks regarding the new investigation.
A source on Trump's legal team attempted to clarify the missive, claiming he was reacting to media reports about the investigation rather than offering public confirmation.
Mr Comey, who had been leading one of several Russian Federation inquiries, testified to Congress last week that the president had pressured him to drop the inquiry into Mr Flynn.
"I don't think donations are disqualifying at all, but if you represented the Clinton Foundation or Clinton herself, that would be a bit disturbing to me", said Sen. ("Daniel Coats, the current director of national intelligence, Mike Rogers, head of the National Security Agency, and Rogers's recently departed deputy, Richard Ledgett, agreed to be interviewed by Mueller's investigators as early as this week.") These witnesses are likely to provide an account not unlike Comey's in which the president wanted them to interfere with Comey's Russian Federation investigation. Trump exclaimed on Twitter, referring to the investigation as a "Witch Hunt".
