Donald Trump lashes out at 'bad,' 'conflicted' Russia investigators

In another tweet earlier on Friday, Mr Trump had said: "After 7 months of investigations & committee hearings about my 'collusion with the Russians, ' nobody has been able to show any proof".

Meanwhile there were unconfirmed reports that deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein, who has taken charge of the Russian investigation since attorney general Jeff Sessions recused himself, could step aside from the investigation.

Comey told the Senate Intelligence Committee on June 8 he believed Trump had directed him in February to drop an FBI probe into former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, that was part of the broader Russian Federation investigation.

The Post reported that the obstruction of justice investigation of the president began days after James Comey was sacked as the FBI Director on May 9. "Sad!" the United States president tweeted.

The president has long vehemently denied any collusion with Moscow.

Wallace said Trump previously admitted in an NBC News interview that he fired FBI Director James Comey because of the Russian Federation investigation, not because of the recommendation of Rosenstein.

President Donald Trump apparently admitted Friday morning that he's under investigation, but he's been obsessed for months with proving he's not.

While the Trump administration initially said that letter was the reason the president fired Comey on May 9, Trump later said he did so because of the "Russia thing".

Mr Comey testified under oath that Mr Trump had told him during a private meeting: "I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go".

"The FBI leak of information regarding the president is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal", a spokesman for Mr Trump's legal team, Mr Mark Corallo, said.

People were amazed Trump would make such public statements about the ongoing investigation, particularly if he was calling out Rosenstein.

Obstruction of justice is a potentially impeachable offense.

If Trump was instead referring to Mueller, that would also raise questions, since the tweet indicated that "the man" is someone who told the president to fire Comey, and there have been no reports that Mueller was involved in that decision.

The Twitter attacks came as Vice-President Mike Pence hired a personal lawyer to represent him in the intensifying investigation.

Trump, in a series of morning tweets, reverted back to the tone that won him the White House, slamming the investigation a day after he called for unity in the wake of a shooting at a Republican congressional baseball practice that injured several people, including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise.

Mr Mueller is overseeing an Federal Bureau of Investigation inquiry into Russia's alleged meddling the 2016 U.S. election and any Trump links to it.
