BJP emerges single largest party in Shimla Municipal polls,

According to PTI reports, the Nabha ward, reserve for Scheduled Caste women, and Shanti Bihar ward recorded heaviest polling at 66 per cent, while Benmur ward, reserved for women, recorded lowest polling at 47 per cent.

Four independents and one CPI-M candidate got elected in the counting that was held here. The fourth independent candidate, Rajesh Kumar, is a BJP rebel and is likely to extend support to enable his former party to get a simple majority.

The number of wards was increased from 25 in 2012 polls to 34 this time and the post of Mayor, who would elected by indirect votes has been reserved for SC woman, as per PTI reports. The Congress party in Shimla Municipal Corporation (SMC) was ruling for 26 years in a row till the last elections. The post of Deputy Mayor is unreserved.

A total of 14 wards recorded 60 per cent or more polling while polling in two wards Benmor and Shangti could not touch even the half mark.

Congratulating his party, PM Modi tweeted to say, "BJP's victory in the Shimla Municipal Corporation is historic & yet again reflects people's faith in development politics".

The stakes were high for six-time Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh too in these elections, as he was trying to prove that he was still a mass leader and could lead the party in the forthcoming Assembly polls. The elections to the office of mayor and deputy mayor were held through direct voting in 2012 and the CPI (M) won both the posts.

Interestingly, the age-old issues of water shortage and spread of water-borne diseases were the prominent issues in the polls, besides shortage of parking lots, traffic jams and unscientific disposal of solid waste.
