Democrats win annual baseball game with special meaning

Baseball teams of Republican and Democratic lawmakers will wear Louisiana State University (LSU) uniform on Thursday's charity match between them to show solidarity with Congressman Steve Scalise, who was seriously injured in a shooting rampage on Wednesday, but the incident has only deepened the divisions in American politics.

In one of the few light moments yesterday, a Republican congressman said he hoped Richmond would bow out of Thursday's game.

The Capitol Police were at the ballfield in Virginia because Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., is the majority whip and member of the leadership. He was tended to by fellow lawmakers including Brad Wenstrup, an OH congressman who is a physician, before being transported to a hospital.

The shooting prompted a massive police response in one of the city's industrial neighborhoods, about 2 miles (3 kilometers) from downtown San Francisco, Assistant Police Chief Toney Chaplin told reporters. After news of the shooting spread on Wednesday, Scalise received many well wishes from his fellow Congress members on both sides of the aisle. Two guns were recovered at the scene, he said.

At a news conference, authorities declined to identify the suspect.

James T. Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, Ill., who belonged to a number of anti-Republican groups, opened fire on the GOP baseball team as it held what would have been the final practice before Thursday's game against the Democrats in Washington at Nationals Park. More than $500,000 was raised a year ago benefitting the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington, The Washington Literacy Center and The Washington Nationals Dream Foundation.

"This appears to be an outrageous, cowardly attack on one of our own", he said. Deep, dark rumors were in circulation that "ringers' would be introduced, but when they lined up at 4 o'clock the nine republicans were stalwart, grand old party men, while the democrats were of the pure Jeffersonian strain".

Trump, in a video message played at the game, said the event had "a much deeper level of meaning" because of the shooting.

DeSantis said he did not know whether the man was the shooter.

"I did tell Joe that I love him before the game and I love him after the game".

UPS spokesman Steve Gaut said the shooter was a company employee.

Investigators said in a statement that the Federal Bureau of Investigation has searched the van, which was parked not far from the Alexandria, Virginia, baseball field where Wednesday's shooting took place.

Brooks told CNN that during batting practice he heard a "bam" and then a quick succession of shots and saw the gunman shooting through the holes in a chain link fence.

He was fielding at second base while practising for the event when he was shot in the hip and sustained serious injuries as the bullet travelled through his pelvis and injured internal organs. He has reported them to Capitol police. All we would have had would have been baseball bats versus a rifle. "Good riddance", the email went on to say.

Scalise's position as whip means he has the hard job of trying to keep order in the fractious party ranks and rounding up votes for bills. He has co-sponsored legislation to weaken gun control laws in the District of Columbia.

It's gameday. Ready to get back on the field and play for @SteveScalise, Matt Mika & friends tonight.

"There was absolutely no shelter". "As they got on the bus, they were all ducking".

The hospital where Rep. Steve Scalise is recuperating from a gunshot wound says he "remains in critical condition, but has improved in the last 24 hours".

The charities are the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Washington, Washington Literacy Center, the Washington Nationals Dream Foundation and, after Wednesday's shooting, the Capitol Police Memorial Fund.
