The shooting left five people hospitalized, including Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise, the Republican whip, two Capitol Police officers, and an aide to Rep. Roger Williams, R-Texas.

Shortly after the shooting, coaches for both teams said they would go forward with the game. According to the hospital, he sustained a single shot to his left hip, with the bullet traveling across his pelvis causing bone fractures, internal organ injury and severe bleeding.

During their conversation, Pelley noted that the congressman was transported in shock to a medical center.

Scalise had been fielding balls at second base when he was shot and then dragged himself away from the infield in a trail of blood. Scalise, a veteran Louisiana politician, was reported by CNN to be clinging to life after surgery.

US President Donald Trump said Thursday that Republican congressman Steve Scalise is in worse condition than initially believed.

Federal law enforcement officials identified the alleged shooter as James Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, Illinois, who died following a shootout with authorities.

The hospital said in an update Wednesday night that the Scalise remains in critical condition.

Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Porter Ranch) smiled broadly when asked who he thought would win the 56th annual Congressional Baseball Game.

Trump had visited the hospital where Scalise was being treated on Wednesday night.

A huge ovation came from the crowd, which swelled to a record 24,959, when Special Agent David Bailey, one of the Capitol Police officers injured in the attack on Republicans at their practice in Virginia on Wednesday, threw out the first pitch.
