A man angry with President Donald Trump unleashed a barrage of gunfire Wednesday morning at Republican members of Congress as they held a baseball practice at a park in Alexandria, Virginia, wounding House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and four others in a frenzied scene that included a long gun battle with police.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the members of Congress, their staffs, Capitol Police, first responders, and all others affected", Trump said in a statement.
Lawmakers who were there described a chaotic scene, with many members of the congressional GOP baseball team huddled in a dugout while Capitol police who were part of Scalise's security detail and local Alexandria police engaged in a shootout with Hodgkinson. A congressional staffer, a lobbyist and a Capitol Police officer were also wounded.
A Facebook page believed to belong to Hodgkinson includes pictures of 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders and rants against Trump and Republicans.
Congressman Williams, who injured his ankle during the shooting, says without them, it could have been a massacre.
