The French manager had been under fire from some quarters due to the Saints' style of play during his reign at St. Mary's and now he has exited the Premier League club.
Southampton have confirmed the departure of Claude Puel after just one season in charge of the club, terminating his contract with immediate effect.
Puel's position has been in doubt since the season concluded, with the majority of Saints fans feeling the club have under-performed this season.
The club went on to thank Puel for his service and announced the search for a new manager was underway.
Southampton have not sacked a manager since Nigel Adkins was binned in 2013, having taken the club from League One to the top flight in just three years.
"Many players have become starting players this year, like Maya Yoshida, Oriol Romeu, Jack Stephens so it's important to continue this role and keep building the future of Southampton".

The prime minister in his speech at the summit also congratulated India which has also achieved the membership. Prime Minister Modi said that India and China were ancient civilisations with a long-standing friendship.
Puel led Southampton to an eighth placed finish and a EFL Cup Final, but failed to win over fans or really stamp his personality on the team.
"There were European games, cup games, with quality".
Southampton won only four of their remaining 13 league games after they were beaten 3-2 by Manchester United in the EFL Cup final on February 26.
Saints are reportedly interested in Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe as a possible replacement, along with ex-Borussia Dortmund head coach Thomas Tuchel.
