Panamagate probe: Sharif to be questioned by JIT today

The prime minister arrived Thursday with his younger brother Shahbaz Sharif, chief minister of Pakistan's Punjab province, and other colleagues at the investigation team's headquarters in Islamabad, waving to TV cameras before entering building.

Pakistan's Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is appearing before a Supreme Court-appointed team investigating allegations against his family's offshore companies and money laundering.

Hundreds of PML-N leaders and workers including lawyers gathered outside the Federal Judicial Academy building to express solidarity with the prime minister.

Finance Minister Ishaq Dar exchange view with him on the political situation of the country and appearance before JIT.

Moreover, former interior minister Senator Rehman Malik is also expected to appear before the JIT on June 23. PM Sharif was in Kazakhstan to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit.

In its judgement of April 20 in the Panama Papers case, the Supreme Court had constituted the JIT and empowered it to summon the Prime Minister, his sons and any other person necessary, to investigate allegations of money laundering, through which four apartments in London's Park Lane area were purchased.

Mr. Sharif has denied any wrongdoing.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has taken the important decision after consulting close aides and is in the process of being briefed by his team of lawyers. As for reports that the JIT has extended its probe to Shehbaz Sharif family and to near and distant relatives of Sharif family are concerned, it is for the Special Bench of the Supreme Court supervising the JIT working whether this is within the given framework of the JIT or not.

The JIT is bound to complete the probe in 60 days unless it is granted additional time. Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif also accompanied him.
