Trump says everyone can agree that we are "blessed to be Americans" and that we are strongest when "we work together for the common good".
One of the people wounded was House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, who has now been listed in critical condition.
Scalise was critically injured and remained in critical condition as of Wednesday afternoon, according to MedStar Washington Hospital Center.
Five people were wounded during the shooting, including Scalise, a House staffer, a lobbyist for Tyson Foods and two Capitol police officers. A second congressman with minor injuries and was transported by a medic unit, reports state.
The president and First Lady Melania Trump later visited Scalise, bringing flowers. Rep. Steve Scalise, one of the truly great people, is in very tough shape - but he is a real fighter.
After his visit, Trump tweeted calling for prayers for the congressman.
Federal Bureau of Investigation officials said the agency is investigating Hodgkinson, looking into his associates, whereabouts, social media impressions, and potential motivations.
Hodgkinson made a number of posts criticizing President Trump and expressing support for independent Sen.
"He went through this a couple of times", he told reporters.
Sanders said Hodgkinson volunteered on his presidential campaign and denounced the shooter's actions. Let me be as clear as I can be.

Scalise is the first member of Congress shot since Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., was attacked in 2011.
The shooting also led gubernatorial candidate Russ Fulcher to delay a major announcement he had been planning for Wednesday.
"He was dragging his body from the second base infield to the outfield to get away from the shooter while all this firing was going on", he said.
"They can't run. If they get up, they are a target". The gunman was taken into custody and later died of his injuries.
Walker said the suspect approached a lawmaker who was leaving the field and asked if it was the Republican team practicing. Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation said it was too early to determine a motive in the shooting or whether the attack was an attempted political assassination.
"What happened today was a targeted act of senseless violence from a disturbed individual. We need medics. Victim down in the baseball field".
