Gear Thursday: Apple iMac 5K Retina 2017 first look

At its developer conference in San Jose, California, Apple unveiled new iMac desktop computers with brighter displays and faster Kaby Lake chips from Intel and more powerful graphics processing for virtual reality applications.

The new iMac 27-inch with 5K display, 21.5-inch with 4K display, and the typical 21.5-inch model have a price tag of $1,799, $1,299, and $1,099 in that order. This new range of iMacs include an iMac 21.5-inch standard variant, a 21.5-inch iMac with Retina 4K display, and a 27-inch iMac with 5K Retina display. The Radeon Pro 570, meanwhile, offers 28 compute units with 1,792 total stream processors and significantly boosted 217GB/s memory bandwidth for a promised 3.6 T/FLOPS, while the Radeon Pro 575 ups the stakes to 32 compute units for 2,048 stream processors and 4.5 T/FLOPS peak performance. SSD storage options are now up to 50% faster, and iMac comes with Thunderbolt 3, the most powerful and versatile port ever. With processor speeds up to 4.2 GHz, 1.3 GHz, and 3.5 GHz, all three Mac models received considerable speed bumps through the new processors.

Apple has announced that it is launching new iMac Pro and iPad Pro models.

In comparison, MacBook Pro 13-inch with Touch Bar and Touch ID comes at a price of Rs 154,900 with an LED-backlit Retina display.

Lastly, Apple also announced a slight upgrade for the 13-inch MacBook Air, which now features a 1.8 GHz processor.

The 15-inch MacBook Pro now comes with more powerful discrete graphics in its standard configuration. It is also said to support one billion colors. There will also be faster SSDs built into all the updated MacBooks and MacBook Pros. Apple also confirmed that the entry level iMac models will have the Intel Iris Plus Graphics which is up to 80 percent faster graphics than the previous generation.

Apple today also gave a sneak peek of the upcoming iMac Pro, which will ship at the end of the year with an 8-core Intel Xeon processor, with options going up to 18 cores. It is not clear when the new Macs will go on sale on India, but given that the pricing is out, these should be hitting the stores soon.

Apple really managed to surprise its fans with a number of new gadgets and software updates at the WWDC 2017.
