Not the French parliamentary elections on Sunday but the ones across the Channel where Prime Minister Theresa May failed to win an outright majority. In 1974, a minority Labour government was in charge for eight months because the Conservatives were willing to abstain on key votes.

"We have done no deals and no pacts with anybody, we're there as the Labour Party with our points of view".

European Union leaders may not offer her much sympathy. "Everybody knows what they are and everyone can see the huge increase in our support because of the way we conducted the election and the comprehensive nature of the programme we put forward".

Mr Corbyn earlier said: "If there is a message from tonight's results, it's this: the prime minister called this election because she wanted a mandate".

"Well, this morning it doesn't look like a strong government, it doesn't look like a stable government, it doesn't look like a government that has any programme whatsoever".

Asked if the uncertainty created by a hung parliament was good for Britain, he replied: "A hung parliament is what we've been given, it's up to MPs to deal with that".

"We are also calling on the new government to support British farming through a number of other measures, including a commitment to continue with the 25-year TB Eradication strategy, ensuring regulation is based on robust scientific evidence, and tackling the increasing problems of rural crime", he added.

"People have said they have had quite enough of austerity politics", he said, repeating his campaign promises to push for better funding for health and education. Without such a majority, the government can not be assured of passing legislation and often has to rely on the support of other parties. This afternoon, however, prime minister Theresa May announced that she has formed a government with the DUP on the steps of Downing Street. Former UK Independence Party (Ukip) leader Nigel Farage has voiced alarm that the process is "in jeopardy".

Philippe, who only took office in May, said the British election "had relatively little to do with Brexit and far more to do with domestic issues, for example linked to security" following the terror attacks in Manchester and London.

"I hope she realises today, very quickly, that she can not continue", said Mr McDonnell.

While the French Prime Minister says the United Kingdom election result, which say PM Theresa May fail to gain a majority will not alter Brexit, delighted British citizens living in France believe otherwise.

But before the deal-making can begin, there is the business of forming a government, and the likelihood is an alliance with the Democratic Unionist Party, which won 10 of Northern Ireland's 18 seats and does not want a hard Brexit.
