Myanmar military members carry a dead body at Sanhlan village on June 8.

What caused the plane's disappearance is still unknown.

There was conflicting information on the number of people on board the Shaanxi Y8 plane when it disappeared, but in the latest update the military said it was carrying a total of 122 people.

"The whole family is very sad and we are waiting for news", he told Agence France-Presse, his voice full of worry after a sleepless night.

A military officer said strong currents has made it hard for boats to reach the shore, so numerous bodies may have to be airlifted to land.

The ship carried 14 crew members and 106 passengers, mostly families of military personnel.

The commander-in-chief's office said 10 corpses, including five children and four women, had been retrieved so far from the Andaman Sea near where the plane went down on Wednesday in the waters off Launglon, near the town of Dawei.

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered to help in recovery efforts, while the U.S. embassy sent sympathies to the families of those lost in the "tragedy".

It is monsoon season in Myanmar, but there were no reports of major storms along the plane's flight route at the time of the crash. It was raining, but not heavily, when contact was lost Wednesday afternoon as the plane was southwest of the city of Dawei, formerly known as Tavoy.

Myanmar's former junta bought several Y8s during their 50 years of isolated rule, when they were squeezed by Western sanctions.

The plane's maker, China National Aero-Technology Import & Export Corporation, has pledged to assist with investigations into the crash.

The military said Myanmar received the Y-8 plane in March past year, and since then it had logged 809 flying hours.

Local fishermen joined nine navy ships, five military aircraft and three helicopters in the search, the military spokesman said.

A total of 9 navy ships and 3 air force planes had been put to work in order to find the missing airplane.
