Xi made the remarks when meeting with reporters at the end of the two-day Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in Beijing.
But Lam said problems would only start to emerge in the coming years, giving Xi time to use the Silk Road plan to burnish his credentials as a global statesman at home and overseas.
"However, China does not do as it wants", it said, explaining India's decision to skip the BRF, a summit organised to showcase President Xi Jinping's Belt and Road Initiative that aims to link Asia, African and Europe through infrastructure and transport networks.

For his part Xi said the BRI was not aimed at cutting across the initiatives of other countries.
The Bangladesh, China, India, Myanmar (BCIM) is one of the planned corridors of this project.
Xi insisted that the Chinese project was not meant to replace existing partnerships. He also pledged $8bn in aid to developing countries and worldwide organization along the belt and road for education and humanitarian work.
"We need to seek win-win results through greater openness and cooperation, avoid fragmentation, refrain from setting inhibitive thresholds for cooperation or pursuing exclusive arrangements and reject protectionism", he said.
Indonesia signed three agreements with China, including a loan worth US$4.48 billion from the China Development Bank for the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed rail project.
India also boycotted the forum because of what it called "sovereignty issues".
The summit was attended by 29 heads of state and governments. She was accompanied by a significant representation of German big business. She said German companies, but not the government, had asked to take part. "It must also be clear what is actually going to be built".

The latest figures indicate that trade between the two had reached US$220 billion in 2014 while China's direct investment in Africa topped US$30 billion in the same year.
