CBI conducts raids at premises of P Chidambaram, Karti in TN

According to reports, the raids are being conducted in connection with the Aircel Maxis case under which CBI is investigating P Chidambaram who was the Finance Minister that gave clearance to the Malaysian firm Maxis to buy 100 percent of Aircel.

"The raids have to take place to get documents and incriminating evidence which they have kept", Subramanian Swamy told television news agency ANI, an affiliate of Reuters.

"The government does not interfere in CBI probes.as a common citizen, I can say the probe must have been going on".

The CBI has been conducting searches at 17 locations across the country, including New Delhi, Gurgaon, Chennai and Chidambaram's hometown of Karaikudi, as part of a probe into the alleged criminal misconduct in approval of foreign investments in India. There is no allegation against any of them.

Chidambaram has said there are no allegations against him or his son.

Reacting to the CBI raid, P Chidambaram had earlier in the day said that the government wanted to silence his voice.

Chidambaram's name surfaced in Aircel-Maxis deal where the then owner of Aircel, Shivashankar was coerced to sell his company to the Malaysian head quartered Maxis whose owners were also issued summons by the Indian Government. Chidambaram issued a statement, saying, "FIPB approval is granted in hundreds of cases".

A total of at least 14 locations in Chidambaram's home city of Chennai were searched by the CBI, India's main federal crime-fighting agency, reports said.

Congress spokesperson RS Surjewala defended Chidambaram saying: "Revenge of false cases has become the DNA of BJP".

"Strongly condemn raids against Chidambaram and Karti Chidambaram". They could not prove allegations against me, they want to silence our voice. The agency also registered the case against INX Media through its director Indrani Mukherjee, Peter Mukherjee, Karti Chidambaram, Chess Management Services (a company of Karti), Advantage Strategic Consulting Limited through its Director Padma Vishwanathan.

The former Finance Minister in a statement denied any misconduct in the grant of Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approval to INX Media.
