On Tuesday, former U.S. President Barack Obama told a food industry conference he was confident that the United States would keep moving "in the right direction" on climate change.

Meanwhile, representatives of almost 200 countries that are party to the Paris agreement are meeting in Bonn this week to discuss technical aspects of implementing the accord.

The Paris Agreement was struck by some 200 countries to combat global warming.

Major US companies in technology, energy, health, consumer goods, and financial services, such as Apple, Google, Unilever, Microsoft, Facebook and Morgan Stanley, believe that the US should remain in the Paris Agreement for the good of the US economy.

President Donald Trump is delaying a decision on whether to withdraw from the landmark global climate deal struck in Paris under the Obama administration.

Bannon and Pruitt are said to be among those arguing for a tougher line, keeping with campaign promises and rejecting global agreements that tie the hands of U.S. industry.

However, fears loom large that if the world's number two carbon polluter, the USA, pulls out, it will throw the pact into disarray.

Reports suggest Ivanka Trump is to meet later today with EPA chief Scott Pruitt, one of the leading voices within the administration calling for a full exit from the Paris accord, to again discuss the White House's position.

David Balton, the USA deputy assistant secretary for global environmental affairs, said Monday: "The last thing I heard is that the president, our president, has indicated that he plans to make a decision some time over the next couple of weeks, but not this week".

"It is clear from the agreement that if you do change your target, you are encouraged to change it in a more ambitious direction", she said.

Meanwhile, more than 215 global investors, collectively managing more than $15 trillion in assets, sent a letter of their own today to President Trump and other G20 leaders urging them to support and swiftly implement the climate accord.

"Because of current debate in Washington, it could be that policies move more slowly but I am confident that the United States will continue to move in the right direction", he said.

"The president has been meeting with his team for quite a while on this matter, and he will not be making an announcement regarding that agreement until after he returns from the G-7", he said, referring to the Group of Seven meeting scheduled for May 26-27 in Italy.

During his election campaign Trump promised to "cancel" the climate deal, clinched in 2015 after years of tough bartering and now signed by 196 countries.

Numerous speakers at a plenary session Monday stressed that the deal can not be "renegotiated" - a proposal of Trump's Energy Secretary Rick Perry.
