I might release tax returns -- when I'm out of office

The phrasing of the letter, which said Trump's taxes did not reflect dealings with Russian Federation "with a few exceptions", prompted instant mockery on Twitter, with the hashtag #withfewexceptions instantly becoming the number one trending phrase in the U.S. and number three globally. From Halloween candy-stealing to being flawless, the jokes were limited, with few exceptions. In it, the authors explain that they have served as tax counsel for Trump and The Trump Organization since 2005.

The letter appears highly unlikely to end the storm over Russian Federation and will only fuel questions over why his tax returns have not been published. Eric Trump has denied that the conversation took place.

U.S. President Donald Trump's lawyers issued a letter on Friday stating that he had no financial ties to Russian Federation - with "a few exceptions".

According to Trump's lawyers, he has received no income from Russian sources, and does not carry debt to Russian lenders.

Trump told NBC on Thursday: "I've given the letter to Senator Lindsey Graham, he has the letter, and I think frankly". The president said, "I have no investments in Russian Federation, none whatsoever".

US stocks close mixed on weak retail earnings
Macy's plunged 14 percent Thursday after the struggling department store operator reported lower sales as more people shop online. Stocks continued to trim losses in the afternoon session but not enough to propel the main indexes into positive territory.

Contrary to what Trump says, nothing prevents a person under audit from releasing his or her tax returns.

CNNMoney can't independently confirm anything in the letter because Trump has yet to release any of his tax returns. The second is a deal Trump struck with a Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev in 2008, to whom Trump sold a Palm Beach mansion for $95 million.

To find out more about potential indirect ties, Trump's full tax returns would be needed.

While we're at it, let's not forget Trump's Russian ties go back further than 10 years.

But in this third exception, the letter asserted, "the amounts are immaterial".
