The two skiers and their guide had left Bonneval-sur-Arc in the morning via a cross-country route which runs along the slopes of the resort.
The hikers were in the middle of a climb when the avalanche hit, according to France Bleu.
The search for more missing people is over and the Mayor of the area, Gabriel Blanc, told media that no more than three people were killed.
He said: "It's over, the three bodies are on the surface, we know from reliable sources that they were only three".

The rescue operation ended in the afternoon and French authorities said the death toll is final.
It is not clear how the block of snow was dislodged, sweeping the skiers down towards a rocky ridge.
The winter period in the French Alps has passed, while mild temperatures, rain and snowfall over the last several days have weakened the snowpack, making skiing conditions risky.
