Sustaining higher education has become a major challenge: President

A release of the President's Secretariat said that on April 25, the President would address the annual convocation of Goa University.

The President was speaking after inaugurating the centenary celebrations of Osmania University at a brief but grand and colourful function.

He said the university witnessed momentous changes in these 100 years, including the two world wars, India's independence and formation of Telangana.

"Osmania University was also established with this dream that it will be an institution of excellence where free minds will meet freely, interact and exchange ideas and live in peaceful co-existence. It is rightly said that if we educate a man, we educate an individual but if we educate a women, we educate an entire family". "I don't blame the academic institutions alone because substantially it required uninterrupted flow of funds and it come either from government or from industries". He also called for greater collaboration between the industries and universities so that the quality of education can be increased and education system can be made more effective. Today EFLU stands out among the Universities of South Asia with specialized competencies in the areas of language, literary and cultural pedagogies, language sciences, teacher education and research. Stating that the country is lagging behind in basic research, the President said, it can achieve economic advancement and regain its rightful place among the global community only when it excels in basic research and innovation.

He quoted India's first Education Minister Moulana Abul Kalam Azad to emphasise the need for research, innovation and interaction with society and said universities can't live in isolation.
