On Tuesday, North Korea conducted live-fire drills near the east coast city of Wonsan that involved 300 to 400 artillery pieces, Yonhap reported.
The nuclear-powered USS Michigan, one of four Ohio-class guided-missile submarines capable of launching cruise missiles, arrived at the South Korean port of Busan, U.S. Naval Forces Korea said in a statement.
In a separate statement, the South Korean President's Office said a meeting had been held to discuss the situation.
North Korea put on a massive live-fire drill on Tuesday to mark the foundation of its military, media reports said, as a US submarine docked in South Korea in a show of force amid growing concern over Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programs.
U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday said that the UN Security Council must be prepared to impose new sanctions on North Korea, amid escalating tensions over its missile and nuclear programmes.
The countries want to include the clause in a United Nations Security Council resolution draft, among other measures such as prohibiting North Korea from exporting its labour.
"People have put blindfolds on for decades and now it's time to solve the problem", he said.
Navy ships also held simultaneous bilateral maritime exercises with South Korea and Japan, the 7th Fleet said.
The Pentagon said its leaders and other top officials will give a classified briefing on North Korea to USA senators today at the White House, rather than the usual secure rooms at the Capitol. But any decision by Trump to resort to military action would be highly risky, principally because the capital of close ally South Korea lies within range of North Korea artillery and rockets.
"The United States should not run amok and should consider carefully any catastrophic effect from its foolish military provocative act", Rodong Sinmun, the official newspaper of the North's ruling Workers' Party, said in a commentary.

Japan's Foreign Ministry also announced that China's envoy for North Korea, Wu Dawei, is arriving in Tokyo on Tuesday for talks with Kanasugi, which may take place later this week.
Other issues cited were canceled worldwide flights to North Korea plus concerns about "safety and security of participants and their belongings, communications with the outside world, possibility of live streaming". Trump reportedly skipped calling Seoul during his telephone conversations with Beijing and Tokyo over North Korea's belligerent actions.
"We agreed to strongly demand that North Korea, which is repeating its provocation, show restraint", Abe told reporters.
The U.S. will lead discussions of additional sanctions against Pyongyang at a Friday meeting of foreign ministers from Security Council members.
He said the envoys discussed ways to increase cooperation from China and Russian Federation in getting the North to abandon its nuclear weapons program.
But the timing, as the USA increases its military presence in the area, allows North Korea to remind its opponents that it could cause crippling damage with conventional artillery to highly populated areas in South Korea.
