On Wednesday, CNN was told by a North Korean government official with knowledge of the event that it was the largest ever drill conducted by the country's military and involved 300 artillery guns. The meetings are "as unsafe as lighting the fuse of an all-out war", the official Korean Central News Agency reported, citing a foreign ministry spokesman.
In a show of force the United States has dispatched the Carl Vinson warship group to the region.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan and Mr Trump agreed to urge North Korea to refrain from what Mr Abe called provocative actions.
Recent US commercial satellite images indicate increased activity around North Korea's nuclear test site, and third-generation dictator Mr Kim has said the country's preparation for an ICBM launch is in its "final stage".
But asked what if North Korea tests an intercontinental missile or nuclear device, she said: "I think then the president steps in and decides what's going to happen".
A North Korean Foreign Ministry spokesman said those meetings clearly reflected the U.S. pressure that could "ignite a full-out war" on the Korean peninsula. John McCain, another Republican who joined Trump for the dinner, told a congressional hearing Tuesday, referring to the 1962 standoff with the Soviet Union that pushed the superpowers close to nuclear confrontation.
North Korea says its nuclear programme is defensive but it is trying to develop weapons small enough to put on ballistic missiles.
McCain said Trump is "exploring all options" on North Korea.
"We can't risk even a one percent possibility of war", he said, warning that a conflict would have "unimaginable consequences".
The submarine is expected to take part in military exercises with the Carl Vinson warship group, which the U.S. said it was dispatching to North Korea earlier this month to "maintain readiness" in the region. Measuring more than 170 meters long, the MI can carry up to 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles and embark up to 66 special operations personnel. The deployment was announced more than two weeks ago.

The nuclear-powered U.S. submarine USS Michigan also made a port call to the South's Busan on Tuesday in another show of force.
Tensions are still running high as the US Navy strike group, including aircraft carrier Carl Vinson, is expected to sail near the Korean Peninsula this weekend.
In one particularly worrisome development for Japan, the North conducted a near-simultaneous launch of four extended-range Scud missiles in March as a rehearsal for striking US military bases in the country. They heard sobering responses.
It said North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is presumed to have watched the exercise.
"A conflict on the peninsula would be unlike anything we have seen in decades", Kelly Magsamen, a former senior USA defense official, said.
The movement came after North Korea threatened to sink USS Carl Vinson. "In the future if there's a war and they get a missile it comes here".
A CNN team in North Korea said citizens in the streets of Pyongyang were celebrating Armed Forces Day, with no visible signs of tension.
Envoys from South Korea, the United States and Japan are discussing North Korea in Tokyo.
In Washington, the Trump administration invited the entire 100-member Senate for a briefing Wednesday on the escalating crisis. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is to chair a ministerial-level Security Council meeting on the North on Friday.
In recent weeks it has faced repeated calls from the U.S. to impose tougher financial sanctions that would hurt the regime in Pyongyang.
