The engineer had confronted them last Sunday morning after discovering they had broken in and stolen keys to his £35,000 Audi S3.
A man has been arrested over the murder of a former Royal Navy officer who was run over in his own auto after confronting thieves outside his home.
A next-door neighbour in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester, said he was woken at 3am by the Audi hitting railings.
The former Royal Navy officer was found seriously injured in a parking area at the rear of his house in the Chorlton area of Manchester and died around an hour later in hospital. There is a very high burglary rate around here.
The family said in a statement: "We hope and pray that other families will not suffer a loss like ours; if you have any information that could help the police in their investigations, please come forward with this".
Mr Samwell's Audi S3 auto was recovered by police badly damaged and abandoned three miles away in the Ladybarn area of the city following the raid.
But he left the armed forces in 2014 and at the time of the tragedy was working for Warrington-based engineers Atkins, building a nuclear power station in Cumbria.

Cranbourne Road, where the crime took place, was cordoned off on Sunday afternoon as forensics officers combed the scene for clues. "We will support the family in any way we can".
"He spent a lot of time in the Navy and he used to tell me some really amusing stories every time I saw him".
"This guy was a really nice guy, I can't think of anything as shocking as this to happen to someone like that".
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has appealed for more information from the public about a number of suspects it believes may still be outstanding.
Greater Manchester Police has said they are specifically interested in speaking to anyone who saw a blue, five-door BMW 1 Series auto in Chorlton on the night of the theft.
