U.S. Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley criticized Russian Federation for denying the UN-led investigation and blocking a resolution that would have helped promote peace in Syria.

But the day before the United Nations vote, Russian President Vladimir Putin called for a United Nations investigation into the incident -- though he blamed the incident on rebels, not Assad.

The intensive diplomatic action comes as the UN Security Council is set to vote on a draft resolution drawn up by the US, Britain and France calling on the Syrian regime to co-operate with a probe into the chemical weapons attack.

"But with its veto Russian Federation said no to accountability", Haley continued.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson made it clear on Wednesday that the United States will not support the continued rule of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Trump added that he discussed with Stoltenberg additional steps to improve the bloc's fight against terrorism in Syria and around the world.

Putin shot back that the charge was fabricated and accused the Trump administration of fabricating the evidence to create a fake confrontation.

On the eve of the talks, far from trying to calm tempers, both sides escalated their rhetoric as the United States tried to prise Moscow and Damascus apart. Tillerson called for Assad to eventually relinquish power.

On Thursday, April 6, President Donald Trump ordered a missile strike on a Syrian government airbase.

And the US warned Russian Federation that it is only isolating itself with its continued support of Assad.

"The world's two foremost nuclear powers can not have this kind of relationship", Tillerson said.

The U.S. has blamed the Syrian government for launching a deadly chemical attack in Khan Sheikhoun that killed over 80 people on April 4, and responded by striking a Syrian air base. I have absolutely no doubt we did the right thing. "We want Russian Federation to use its influence over the Assad regime to stop the madness and the cruelty we see every day on the ground".

Both the Syrian government and opposition have asked for an independent investigation Safronkov said, "whereas the OPCW is doing nothing, for reasons unknown". As the Federal Bureau of Investigation and multiple congressional committees investigate potential collusion between Russia and Trump's campaign in last year's US election, Trump can point to his hard-line stance as fresh evidence that he's far from beholden to the Russian leader.

"The world's two primary nuclear powers can not have this kind of relationship", he said. Russian military personnel are based there, as part of the extensive military aid which Moscow provides to Assad - they received advance warning from the Pentagon that the strikes were imminent. Trump said it was "certainly possible" though "probably unlikely".

Trump said North Atlantic Treaty Organisation has been the "bulwark of global peace and security", and is no longer "obsolete".
