Writing for the Sunday Telegraph, Johnson said the United Kingdom and its allies will gather evidence to prosecute those who were responsible for a recent chemical weapons attack in Syria.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has received congratulations from his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on the 71st anniversary of Syria's independence.

Sources say things got complicated when President Trump bombed a Syrian airfield in retaliation for a chemical weapons attack that systematically murdered innocent Syrian men, women and children.

"They are also terrifying. They still have time to be on the right side of the argument".

However, Johnson has faced criticism for not persuading G7 countries to agree to sanctions against Russian Federation for its ties with Assad.

In light of some recent developments, I am unable to attend today's ceremony, as I am attending to some personal family matters . In other words, while politics certainly played a role for some , others may have simply had a been-there-done-that attitude.

In his first interview since the strike and the subsequent U.S. air assault, the Syrian president said reports the Syrian government carried out the attack were "100% fabrication".

USA president Donald Trump ordered the airstrikes after the Syrian regime used chemical weapons against its opponents-killing about 80 people, including children, in one of the deadliest chemical weapons attack in history. "He has won back most of "operational" Syria".

Before the April 4 chemical attack, the West was "on the verge of a grim consensus", which had now changed, said Johnson.

The consensus had been that it would be more sensible to concentrate on the fight against the Islamic State group and to accept reluctantly that removing Assad, "though ultimately essential - should await a drawn out political solution".
